Sub-Contracting with Gemba Systems
Are you interested in working with Gemba Systems, but don't want to give up your independence as a contractor?
That's okay with us! We engage sub-contractors. We've chosen to work as a team because we believe that teamwork can accomplish far more than individuals working alone. But we also recognize that some people want to maintain a degree of independence and wish to remain an independent contractor. It's easy to work with Gemba Systems without sacrificing your independence. We engage independent sub-contractors, and we do it in a way that goes beyond your typical sub-contract arrangement.

Sure... most companies - especially IT consulting firms - use sub-contractors (emphasis on the "use" part). Meaning that they apply them to their client engagements, paying them for client-billable hours. But the collaboration, and the trust, usually ends there. Most consulting companies don't collaborate with their subs beyond the objectives of the billable client engagement. They don't spend time helping the subs learn new skills. They don't include them in discussions about evolving the service approach or general strategy. And they certainly don't pay them for time that isn't billable to a client. Such levels of collaboration are reserved for employees. Gemba Systems is different. We don't use subs - we engage them.
You've worked hard to get where you are and you value your independence. That's probably why you became an independent contractor in the first place. Why let that go just because you also want to be a part of a team? You don't have to! We view sub-contractors and employees the same way. The only difference between the two is really just the way they are compensated. For many professionals, independent contracting is key to their tax strategy. For some it's because their goals overlap with co-workers but are not identical. And for others it's just about freedom. We don't want to disrupt that and you don't need to.
Some of our subs are deeply involved in the core strategy of our company in addition to their client engagement work. They help us develop content, design workshops, create services, edit collateral, make delivery improvements, etc. Some are full-time fixtures within our infrastructure - i.e. they have a Gemba telephone extension, Gemba business cards, etc. Some are even on full time retainer so they can be secure in knowing that their monthly income will be steady for a period of time, independent of their client-billable hours. They are on the team. Effectively we don't have two separate classes of associate - employee and sub-contractor. To us, everyone we engage is a business partner. And business partners participate in the evolution of our business.
